This engaging and beautifully illustrated lesson has been designed to help students studying the problems faced by the Weimar Republic and how successfully it dealt with them from 1919 - 1923. It deals specifically with the problems of setting up a democratic republic, dealing with extremists and their putsches, coping with the aftermath of the Treaty of Versailles, the Ruhr Crisis and Hyperinflation. The lesson includes a number of activities which can be seen in the detailed preview. The main activity revolves around completing a table summary of each problem, what action was taken by the government and evaluating how successfully it was dealt with. Alternatively the relevant slides could be printed off, displayed in the walls or on tables whilst the students complete a gather and share or market place activity to summarise the information. These include aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, activities, thinking skills activities, animated diagrams,maps, pictures, templates and information slides. I am especially proud of animated diagrams that I have created to help explain the divisions of powers in the Weimar Constitution and how the Dawes Plan was designed to help both Germany and the Allies. I spent a considerable amount of time on these as it is vital that students understand their significance for later in the course. The PowerPoint also includes a homework activity, an extended writing task and a feedback task. How successful was the Elizabethan Church Settlement Act of 1559?

This great lesson is designed to help students assess how successful the Elizabethan Church Settlement Act of 1559 was at promoting peace and stability in England? This is potentially a difficult topic to teach, but these resources approach the topic in a fun and engaging way that is suitable for the full ability range. They also link up the religious changes from previous Tudor monarchs and will allow students to predict what problems would face the Stuarts. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a PowerPoint with thirteen slides. These include aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, thinking skills activities, pictures, templates and information slides. When you deliver this lesson, you can choose from a selection of starters which include a snowballing starter of the key words or a thinking fork template on attitudes towards the death of Queen Mary. The next activity involves getting your students to draw a religious seesaw and then sorting various statements from the Elizabethan Church Settlement Act and deciding whether they would satisfy either Catholics or Protestants. Once complete, students can draw a line to decide which side the changes benefited the most. Later on in the course, you can refer back to this diagram whilst looking at either James or Charles I and draw links and conclusions as to how they were unpicking the compromise and laying the foundations for the English Civil War. The next activity gets students to sort through a series of cards to help them evaluate how successful the Elizabethan Church Act was at reducing religious tensions. This great resource is designed to help students evaluate the economic, social and environmental problems facing US farmers 1919 - 1939. It can also be used to help students evaluate how successfully which problems the New Deal Alphabet Agency AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Administration) either solved or indirectly created. It can be used as a starter or plenary or along side another resource that I have uploaded on my TES shop ‘The New Deal: AAA.’ The resource includes three factor cards labelled economic, social and environment as well as fourteen statement cards describing the problems faced by US farmers 1919 - 1939. The resource also includes a learning objective, instructions and two addition extension tasks. The first asks students to Review their cards you have sorted and create a key to show which problems were solved or created by the AAA. The second task asks students to write an extended answer evaluating ‘how successful was the AAA at solving the problems of US farmers in the 1930s?’. Why did Charles I decide to rule without Parliament in 1629?

This outstanding lesson, which has been fine tune in the classroom by experienced teachers, is designed to help students understand the problems facing Charles I in 1625 and why he decided to rule without Parliament. Once students have worked their way through the introduction, they are presented with a number of problems facing Charles I ranging from religious, financial, foreign relations, the growth of Parliament and his beliefs in the Divine Rights of Kings. Once they have reviewed, categorize and prioritized these problems, students are then asked to produce a speech suggesting how Charles I could solve his problems and then peer assess each others speeches. This could be turned into a competition. In the final plenary activity, students are presented with Charles I’s decision to rule without Parliament and asked to assess whether it would help to solve his problems in the long term? This lesson is suitable for the full range of ability. I have built a number of different tasks and activities around these different exercises so that you can chose a suitable flight path through the topic. So, for example, students can use to produce their summary diagram of Charles I’s problems or color code the exercise book sized version that I have included at the end of the PP. I have also differentiated the problem slides so that you have a foundation and core version. This outstanding lesson has been designed to help students studying the historical controversy surrounding why some women got the vote in 1918. It can be used with the full spectrum of ability. If you wish, you can purchase the card sorts separately for less, under the headings of card sort: Why did some women get the vote in 1918? However, to sweeten the deal, I have also included my diamond 9 activity, which can be given to your gifted and talented or more able for as a separate task to extend their critical thinking skills. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download an editable Microsoft Word document as well as a PowerPoint. The Word document include aims, instructions, four heading cards labelled 'Suffragettes', 'Suffragists', 'First World War' and 'Politics as well as twenty statement cards that can be sorted under them. The PowerPoint presentation is designed to help facilitate the lesson and includes aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, appropriate video clip links, assessment question, pupil mark scheme and feedback sheets. The lesson kicks off with a snowballing starter activity, followed by a brief one side introduction to why some women got the vote in 1918, with an appropriate link to a video clip on YouTube. It is assumed that you have already studied the difference between a suffragette and a suffragist as prior knowledge. The next slide facilitates the card sort, whilst the fourth slide facilitates a pair / group discussion on which factor was the most important. Once this is complete, students can do a follow up assessment on the topic either for homework or next lesson. These fun and interactive resources cover the history of coal mining before 1984 as well as the long term causes which can be found in the 1970s and the 'Winter of Discontent and the political climate of the 1980s. The final lesson covers the short term causes such as the Conservative government’s privatisation agenda and NUM opposition. These fun and engaging lessons have been designed to teach a unit on the origins of the trade union movement in Britain and the founding of the Labour Party. Each lesson includes a PowerPoint and Worksheet, which have also been converted to PDF just in case you haven’t got office. All the tasks and activities have been differentiated. We have gone to town on this topic so there are word searches, source questions, quizzes, missing word activities, extended writing tasks, heads and tails, starters, plenaries and videos clips in each lesson. These resources are suitable for KS3, KS4 and could easily be used for an adult education class in the community. Its really important to teach this topic as its often forgotten and missed out by fat too many schools, yet trade unionism is one of the key foundations of our democracy. This lesson is aimed students studying the USA 1919 - 1945 and focuses on the political aims and backgrounds of the two candidates in the presidential US election in 1932. When you purchase this lesson it will also include a card sort as well as a Venn diagram activity, which could be used to compare and contrast the two men. The Power Point includes a snowballing starter, information about both men, the political ideas of both the republican and democratic parties as well as a source analysis question on the cartoon 'Taking out the Trash.' The card sort includes two heading cards labeled Herbert Hoover and Franklin D Roosevelt and 22 cards with quotations and facts about both men for students to sort through before they stick them into their exercise book. Once completed the class can feedback and debate how the backgrounds of each presidential candidate may have influenced their political beliefs. Meanwhile, the Venn diagram activity includes a blank Venn and a information box at the bottom from which students can select key facts and political ideas about the two presidential candidates to help them complete the diagram. Once completed the activity, students could add additional information that they have learnt from the class text book or video clip. I usually allow my students to chose which activity they wish to do, but you could do both or direct your students to one or the other, depending upon their ability.
